Reading Competition
Advisor Ms. Vandyke
The Interscholastic Reading Competition is a semi-annual event sponsored by Appalachia Intermediate Number 8. It is open to all schools and school districts in Blair, Bedford, Cambria, and Somerset Counties, as well as schools in surrounding counties where there is no Competition. Teams from different schools and school districts collectively read a required list of approximately forty-two books and compete in their knowledge of the books. Teams may be comprised of eight to twelve students, plus two alternates. Once the students on the team have been chosen, the team usually meets once a week from 7:00-7:30 a.m. During that time, students choose books to read for the competition, discuss and review problems/questions and the organization and rules of the competition, and perform other needed duties. The requirements to be on the Interscholastic Reading Competition team is that a student must have a love of reading. Also each student must be able to read and become an expert in three to five (or more) books for the Competition.
