For the National Junior Honor Society group community service project this year, the fifth annual mini-thon was held to raise money for the Mt. Lion Backpack Program. This program provides backpacks to local elementary students filled with two breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners and two snacks. This program was developed to assist families suffering from financial hardships. At the mini-thon, students had their choice of dancing, playing basketball, jumping rope, walking, playing ping pong or playing badminton. The students collected pledge donations to remain active for four hours from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. T-shirts were also sold prior to the event with all proceeds benefiting the backpack program. The students were able to raise a record breaking $7557 for the Mountain Lion Backpack Program! Individual pledge record was also shattered by Cassie Kyle who raised $570! Over the last five years, our organization has raised over $30,000 for this program! It is so heartwarming to see kids helping kids.
In the first 4v4 badminton tournament, a tense championship game ended with the girls being victorious! The team consisted of Adalynn Cherry, Sarah Graham, Darrian Berkheimer and Kayla Blough. In the second tournament, Austrian exchange student, Stefan Harold, helped Shamus Walker, Dylan McNelly and Ray Boose win their championship game. The badminton courts never stopped with two 2v2 tournaments kicking off after the 4v4 tournaments. In the first one, Kayla Blough and Dylan Igoe were the pair to beat, and the second one came down to the very last minutes of the night with Cassie Kyle and Lydia Baum walking away as the winners. Throughout the night, Chastity Brunner jumped her way to the top to win the jump rope contest and out hula-ed everyone to win that contest, also. Cassie Kyle won the limbo contest. The students had a great time while helping a worthy cause!
