Meet Mr. Werking

Hello! My name is John-Michael Werking. I am a life-long Pennsylvanian - born and raised in Altoona, PA. I graduated from Great Commission Schools in Altoona and received my bachelor's degree in elementary and special education from Saint Francis University in 2011. This is my seventh school year at the Altoona Area Junior High School. I am currently a learning support teacher who also facilitates/advises the AAJHS Chess Club. Volunteerism is a passion of mine which includes taking on small roles in the AAJHS Drama Club productions as well as being a chaperone for special events such as the Fire and Ice Dance for eighth graders. I have an eclectic taste of music and enjoy playing the guitar. My other hobbies include landscaping, gardening, and growing bonsai trees. I am also a former giant pumpkin grower. Reading and writing poetry are other joys in my life. I enjoy long walks in nature and exploring Pennsylvania's countryside. I am currently on the mentoring committee at the junior high school which gives me the opportunity to "check" and "connect" with students to promote positive school and life outcomes. Another extra-curricular activity of mine is being a GED exam proctor at the junior high school. I consider it to be a tremendous privilege to literally see our community members embark on self-improvement through the attainment of their GED certificate. If I were to be a regular education teacher, I imagine I would be an English Language Arts or social studies teacher. Establishing and maintaining respect and rapport with students is immensely important to me as a special education teacher and mentor.
